Types of Arthritis

 

Arthritis commonly affects people over the age of 40 however, it is not restricted to just older people with even children being affected. Women are slightly more prone to the disease than men.

There are two types of arthritis

 

  • Osteoarthritis - Typically age related, though physical causes and heredity play a part.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis - Autoimmune disease


Where two bones meet the there is a layer of cartilage to cushion the connection osteoarthritis is a condition where the smooth cartilage gets roughened and thins this leads to swelling and inflammation and it is this inflammation that is the source of the pain.

 

Osteoarthritis

  • Arthritis, be caused for a variety of reasons:
  • It can result from an injury to the joints.
  • it can result from ageing
  • It can be passed on through families
  • It can be caused by obesity.

 

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that causes the same swelling and stiffness in the joints however the courses are as a result of an auto immune response where your immune system attacks the cells in the joints making them stiff and swollen

However, the joint becomes swollen whether by as a result of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis the swelling and inflammation that causes the pain is the symptom to be targeted by any treatment.
